NASA’s Office of the Chief Technologist Recognizes Adam Kissiah’s Invention

NASA’s Office of the Chief Technologist recognizes technology developed by NASA that has benefits for the entire nation.  In the article “Hearing is Believing”, Adam Kissiah is recognized for the technology he developed while working as an engineer at NASA.  Driven by his own hearing problem and three failed corrective surgeries, Kissiah started working in the mid-1970s on what would become known as the cochlear implant, a surgically implantable device that provides hearing sensation to persons with severe-to-profound hearing loss who receive little or no benefit from hearing aids.

Sprung from the mind of an engineer, this medical miracle is a perfect example of how NASA knowledge is boundless and can touch the lives of many in ways unimaginable.

    Hi Mr. Kissiah,

My name is Brittany Pellegra and I was one of the few people that received a cochlear implant in my generation. I am 24 years old and my oldest brother,30, has a cochlear implant as well. In that generation especially in Memphis was very rare for us to be able to receive cochlear implants but I am very blessed that my parents wanted us to have the opportunity to hear. I e-mailed you because I read the Bible everyday and I wanted to share with you what I read this morning. I hope it’s okay if I share my testimony with you that I used this morning to share with my friends and Facebook. Below is a short testimony.

“In Mark 6:30-44, Jesus was able to feed 5,000 people even when the disciples didn’t believe that He could. When Jesus asked the disciples to feed the 5,000 people, their response were, “That will be 8 months worth of our wages! Impossible!” Jesus showed them the impossible and was able to feed 5,000 people! Wow, how great is God? Now, I wondered and asked myself this question, “What is one impossi…ble thing that I think God/Jesus can’t do or heal me? My immediate thought was, “Well, it would be impossible to turn my deaf ears into hearing ears!” But then again, Jesus did!! Jesus gave a remarkable human being a gift to help others. Adam Kissiah Jr. invented cochlear implants that give people like me a chance to hear like normal hearing people. Praise God! Jesus taught me today in the passage that NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH JESUS! Read Adam Kissiah Jr. story: http://www.sti.nasa.gov/tto/spinoff2003/hm_3.html

I want to say thank you so much for overcoming a lot and never giving up on cochlear implants because Jesus gave you this gift to help others. I know you probably hear this every day but I am SO BLESSED to be able to hear, so thank you. I hope I can follow your footsteps and inspire and encourage others. I would love the opportunity to meet you one day and share my story with you.

I hope you have a wonderful day!
